Jenny O. Smith, M.D. was born in Hattiesburg, Miss. She received a Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Engineering from Mississippi State University in 2000, graduating Summa Cum Laude. Dr. Smith then received her medical degree from the University of Mississippi School of Medicine in 2004, and then completed both her Internal Medicine Residency (2007) and Gastroenterology Fellowship (2010) at Virginia Commonwealth University – Medical College of Virginia.
Dr. Smith is Board Certified in both Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology. She has had multiple academic publications in the areas of Barrett’s esophagus, advanced liver disease and liver transplantation, and viral hepatitis. She practices general gastroenterology and hepatology and is skilled in endoscopic procedures including upper endoscopy, colonoscopy, radiofrequency ablation of Barrett’s esophagus, hemorrhoid banding and treatment of bile duct disorders with ERCP.
Dr. Smith was in private practice in Charlottesville, Va. for four years before returning to her Southern roots and coming to Maryville in 2014. She is a member of the American Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, American College of Gastroenterology, American Gastroenterological Association and the Bockus International Society for Gastroenterology.
Dr. Smith lives in Maryville, Tenn. with her husband, Scot, and her daughter. In her leisure time, Dr. Smith enjoys hiking, reading, going to amusement parks and watching college sports.
